Years of research and development are behind this knowledge base

The knowledge base draws on chronicles, Schwalm yearbooks, church registers, historical maps, administrative records, press sources and academic literature. It also draws on numerous contributions from historians and freely accessible publications by universities, museums and archives.

The technical development was equally demanding: information had to be structured, linked, indexed with search terms, checked for contradictions and prepared so that thousands of individual facts could become a queryable regional knowledge system.

Wherever possible, we compare new information with several sources, examine contradictions and only then add it to the knowledge base. Personal memories are identified as such. We distinguish documented facts, traditions and legends and indicate where questions remain open. Many topics have been expanded or corrected more than once.

One knowledge block can support many questions and link to other entries. The figure refers to the whole knowledge base. Source and page references help provide context; coverage and supporting evidence vary by topic. Philipp aims to flag uncertainty. Feedback helps improve answers.

Contributions are very welcome

The Schwalm Memory also depends on the knowledge of people from the region. Anyone who discovers an error, would like to add information, knows a useful source, or can contribute a photograph, document or personal memory is warmly invited to take part. Suggestions about overlooked topics, people or connections are equally valuable.

The project is intended to keep growing through shared knowledge. Anyone who would like to contribute or support its further development is welcome to get in touch.

Updated: 15 October 2026 · 55,000+ knowledge blocks.
Source research continues: yearbooks and other publications are analysed step by step, existing topics are expanded and specific gaps are addressed. This overview describes key topics; it does not mean every book or question has already been fully analysed. Historical information reflects its source and period.
